Chapter Thirteen

DEEDEE

DeeDee knew immediately she shouldn’t have heard what Dean said to his brothers. She summoned her best oblivious smile and pretended like she hadn’t overheard a thing.

“Sophia says you’re missing all the best food, and the party is missing its host,” she told Topher.

Keeping her gaze on Topher was easier than seeing Dean’s gruff face. Above his stiff jaw, his eyes had a faraway cloud to them that DeeDee didn’t like at all. Her heart sank as she approached the men and tried to keep her clueless facade in place.

“And Belle was hoping the chef would answer questions about the delicious food, instead of his wife,” DeeDee told August with another smile.

“No problem,” Topher told her. “We can leave you and Dean alone and handle the party.”

DeeDee gulped but kept smiling. “I have to get back to the kitchen and watch the oven. We’ve got lots of desserts so don’t eat too much!”

She spun around and led the way back into the party, making a beeline for the kitchen herself. Her head spun and her breath could barely keep up. One thought circled in her mind and almost brought a whirlpool of tears:

Dean was looking for a wife and she was going to miss her chance.

The next day, DeeDee needed to avoid Dean. She paced the entire time she and Maisy worked on the supply list, then she decided to do the shopping herself. Maisy was concerned about the change in routine but, for once, said nothing. DeeDee took a ranch truck and headed into town, not feeling any relief until she was out from under the Double R sign and on the county road.

She should have known a rumor like that would be on everyone’s lips. All of Isabel was chattering over the fact that Dean Rolston might be seriously looking for a bride. Only a few sensible people, and the ones that knew him well, were discussing just how long it would take for the money to forfeit to local charities. Alessa was thankfully one of those people

“It’s ridiculous for anyone, especially Rolston Senior, to think they could hurry Dean towards something as serious as matrimony,” Alessa told DeeDee. “It once took him three months to decide on a new saddle.”

DeeDee leaned against the counter at The Tack and Feed, and hoped her friend was right. “So, you’re betting Dean won’t give in to the will requirements and all that money will go to charity?”

Alessa looked shocked. “You, of all people, doubt that? Unless there’s something you know that I don’t know.”

DeeDee frowned. “Dean doesn’t discuss his love life with me.”

“I was thinking he would be more obtuse, maybe asking your ring size or something like that,” Alessa suggested.

“What?” DeeDee was genuinely shocked.

Alessa gave a soft, frustrated sigh. “Your name has come up once or twice in all the discussions of Dean Rolston getting married. How could it not?”

DeeDee’s heart fluttered but reality killed its flight quickly. She was still technically married and afraid she was in a long debate with Gus about when he would actually sign for their divorce.
